The changing landscape of rural America. Big economic forces impacting big-hearted, sympathetic characters. New ways to look at the Great Divide. Interesting places and hints of God. Great writing. These are the things that make for a great Heartlands Read.
Throw in fracking and you’ve got Eliza Griswold’s gripping and sometimes-terrifying book, Amity & Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America. Griswold takes her years of experience in reporting from the developing world in Africa and Asia and applies it to western Pennsylvania where the towns in the book’s title are welcoming the new natural gas boom made possible by hydraulic fracturing technology. The byproduct of the fracking, as Griswold’s reporting makes clear, are divided and broken communities suffering from the blessings of resource abundance and the curse of resource extraction.
