The greatest freedom is not to be found

ahead—-in the land of what comes next. It’s not

what we can slide into when we get past

the moment we’re in. Because when the future gets here it will be

the present and just as burdened by the expectation that

the better day is the one not yet arrived.

It is this moment

that contains all we need. It is

the love with which I am surrounded. The

mind-blowing Fullness of this

very day. It is as loud as the silence the birds

demand to fill. The possibility of beloved community so tragically denied.

There is a moment

right here. The only

one I’ll ever be in. Until

the next.

  1. I like the way you’ve played with enjambment and greatly varying line length to slow us readers down and keep us in the poem and in the moment. Form underscores meaning. Bravo!
